Al Southwick of Leicester, World War II veteran and longtime Telegram & Gazette storyteller, dies at 100
Prolific writer, author, composer, historian, veteran, newspaperman and, until very recently, a weekly Telegram & Gazette columnist, Albert B. Southwick died Friday.
He was 100 years old.
He passed away at the Leicester home he built in 1953, on land owned by his family for more than 250 years.
While Southwick was many things during his own, storied century, many remember him for his breadth of knowledge on topics of both history and current events.
"He was prolific; he was already a great writer at (age) 20," Southwick's son, Jason, said. "He wasn't a sensationalist, he was straight up. He didn't like to point out the negative. His knowledge of stuff was great."
Before he suffered a stroke last year, and stopped writing, Southwick was believed to be the oldest active newspaper columnist in the country.
Since then, the T&G has been republishing some of his best columns
