Alice Robertson, 66, a cafeteria owner who campaigned through her restaurant's newspaper advertisements, was an unlikely candidate.

Known as "Miss Alice," she had worked as a missionary, teacher, postmistress and entrepreneur. She had dabbled in politics but never before run for office. She didn't even support women's suffrage.

Still, she became only the second woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives with her victory. She was the only congresswoman in Oklahoma history until earlier this month, when Mary Fallin, 51, won the 5th District seat.

"She certainly was a courageous woman back over 80 years ago to serve in a male-dominated Congress. And she was a trailblazer, and she opened up opportunities for women like me to follow in her footsteps," Fallin said after the Nov. 7 election. "She certainly was an inspiration for me."
